Xtrend ET 9000 made a strong impression when we reviewed it here on http://xtrend.webs.com. Now time has come for a brand new box from Xtrend, the Xtrend ET 6500. Read our review on this new box which features a plug and play tuner.
ET65000 comes as equipped with a DVB-S2 tuner installed ,but as it is a modular plug and play tuner, it is possible to take the DVB-S2 tuner out and replacing it with a DVB-C or DVB-T tuner.
First impressions when unpacking is that the ET6500 lives up to Xtrend’s other models in terms of build quality etc... One thing I’m really happy with is the looks, think it looks like a classy receiver, looks really smart in my opinion.
Fitted HDD and Connected up to motor dish, flashing OpenPli was a breeze, simply follow on screen instructions shown on the display. Transferred my Enigma 2 settings and I was up and running in less that 5 mins!
Picture quality is excellent in both SD & HD. Universal remote is a nice feature if you would like to be able to control your TV with the same remote. Zapping times are super fast, approx 1.63 seconds!
Scanning satellites is working is working spot on, just as good as my other Enigma 2 receivers.
If I’m honest I just can’t fault anything about the Xtrend et6500, although some critics will say that it’s priced a little high for a single tuner without actually looking at the specification of the receiver.
Obviously Xtrend ET6500 is far ahead its nearest competition - Vu+Uno! It has better, faster processor bigger flash memory and RAM.
After test driving the new ET6500 we can say that it certainly does not disappoint. It is a very successful Linux receiver which builds on the stability of the Xtrend by adding amazing speed and features by the way of the new and faster CPU.
The ET6500 impress us with its fast booting and channel zapping. We do recommend installing a third party image though for exposing all the settings and options on this box. Xtrend seems very active when it comes to supporting their receivers. The Xtrend Support Image runs absolutely stable, also supported officially by OpenPLi, OpenAAF, Power-Board, SIF , ViX and other Open Aliance teams!
If you are in the market for a rock solid single tuner box then look no further than the Xtrend ET6500.

The Xtrend ET9000 is a Twin DVB-S2 tuner Linux satellite receiver with the ability to integrate hard disk, programable remote control and PiP feature (Picture in Picture) which is great if you want to watch 2 different football games at the same time.
The first thing that i noticed with this receiver is the huge amount of memory it has 512mb DDR Memory. This is more than all of the similar competitive products. It is faster even then Vu+Duo. Design is a matter of taste, I think it looks exclusive. Behind the front flap on the box on the left you find 2 card readers and 2 ci slots. As with Enigma 2 boxes in general, the built in card readers require installations of softcams.
The built in tuners do support blind scan but there is no software support for this in Enigma 2 yet sadly. DiSEqC 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2/USALS is of course supported. The speed boost of the Broadcom 7405 or more memory does not speed up scanning for channels, it is pretty slow as with Enigma 2 receivers in general. But many users of this kind of box probably use settings downloaded from the web anyway. The channel editor for this, Dreamboxedit works without problems with the ET-9000.
Installation of a new Image couldn't be easier, Unzip the image onto USB stick. Put the USB stick into 1 of the 3 USB ports, switch on and the rest is taken care of..in no time it will be loaded up. Xtrend ET-9000 uses the well known Enigma2 frontend software which is very user friendly and allows the use of many plugins and add-ons.
There are several teams that support image development with this receiver and it will only get stronger. It can also use all the general SoftCams that are currently available. The installation of the hard drive is quite simple, but it does require that you take of the cover. Once installed Next thing to do then is initialize the HDD. So boot up the ET9000 again and once done press Menu > Setup > System > Harddisk > Initialization > Red > Yes and this will start doing the job, depending on the size of the drive this will take a few seconds to a few minutes! You can use and standard 3.5" SATA drive.
My honest thoughts on this one, it does exactly what you'd expect at the moment, if you are interested in the extras over the DUO like PIP and tuner loop-through per tuner plus the fanless operation then this has to be considered now, and with some good support from PLi, Black Hole, Egami and HdFreaks already and only likely to get better it does look a real contender just like the DUO was this time last year! Been testing one of the new Xtrend ET5000 receivers out over the past few days and I have to say, wow! It's got a Broadcom 7405 400MHz dual core processor (this means it's most likely to gain third party support and already has done from some BIG groups, OpenPLi, Vix, Egami for example), 256MB RAM, 2 card readers, fully supports 3D and a first for Enigma2 receivers, supports blind scan! Xtrend ET5000 has an external PSU, this would result in less heat being generated inside the receiver. Build quality is excellent, just as good as any Dreambox or VU+ receiver. Remote control feels nice. There is no front panel display on these but 3 different coloured LEDs and it's real easy to flash new firmware, just download your firmware, put the ET5000 fold in the root of a USB stick, put the stick in any of the USB ports (there are 3 in total, 1 front and 2 rear) then hold the up arrow on the front of the receiver and the new firmware will start flashing, it's as easy as that! You'll need an external USB of some description if you want PVR functions, there is no option for an internal HDD on the ET5000, external USB drives seem to work great though!
Overall I think this is a fantastic little receiver that will give any linux Enigma 2 a good run for its money with its dual core Broadcom CPU and 256mb of DDR ram its works really fast! Faster than any DM800 I’ve tried and just as fast as its bigger brother the ET9000! Contact www.sat24store.com if interested in this, they have it in stock and available now!
